I had been thinking a lot about home, the idea of home and what it means, on the heels of selling our house in Los Angeles, the place where we mostly raised our kids. I designed the space with the help of my friend and interior designer Windsor Smith, who, as she shares in the story below, starts not with furniture or paint but with feeling, to craft a space that is thoughtfully and uniquely tailored to how you want to live in it. It is a special kind of alchemy she works, taking a space and shaping it to be a true reflection of those who live there.
Saying goodbye to the home we’d created, I had been wrestling with that peculiar sad, stretching-of-the-heart feeling that comes with letting go of something you love, standing in the rooms and being present to the memories we had created within the walls there, the healing and growing that transpired. We were just about packed and ready to go when the fires started. And unlike myself, who had the gift of a consensual goodbye, violently, unexpectedly, so many of our friends and colleagues were forced into parting with their beloved homes with no preparation, little warning. Never to return.
